Women Criminal Defense Attorneys: Caroline Roberto Fights for Client in High-Profile Penn State Case

Criminal Defense Attorney Caroline Roberto from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is representing Tim Curley, one of the Penn State administrators, who was just charged for a second time relating to the Jerry Sandusky prosecution.  Her client was charged with endangering the welfare of children, obstruction, and conspiracy after originally being charged a year earlier with perjury and failure to report abuse.  The additional charges came on the heels of the release of a 39-page grand jury report.

Caroline Roberto has over 30 years of experience and is not new to the spotlight, having previously been involved in many local high profile cases. When Caroline took up Mr. Curley’s case a year ago, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette highlighted the prominent lawyers involved in the case-- and Bruce Teitelbaum, a retired assistant U.S. attorney that once opposed her in a organized crime case in the 1990s, described the passionate way that Caroline fights for her client, noting that “her biggest attribute, besides just being a very skilled lawyer, is her degree of concern and the amount of vigor she puts in for each client as an individual.” He continued, stating that Caroline “is definitely one of the most premier defense attorneys in the Pittsburgh area.” Besides being an experienced litigator, Ms. Roberto co-founded the Women's Bar Association of Western Pennsylvania and is a past president of the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys.

Just recently, Caroline Roberto filed motions in the original perjury case relating to the role of the Penn State general counsel who acted as counsel for her client during his grand jury testimony and thereafter testified against him.  At the heart of the motion are allegations of prosecutorial misconduct and the violation of the presumed attorney-client relationship.  She is asking for dismissal of the case or alternatively the suppression of the grand jury testimony.

There has been intense media coverage of the case from the outset that only intensified after her client was charged again recently.  Another seasoned woman criminal defense lawyer is on the front lines in one of this country’s most recognized criminal prosecutions, and that deserves our attention.  I for one will be following this case and Caroline Roberto… and I will keep you posted.
